No matter how big the company or how complicated its product, the content strategy always boiled down to answering three straightforward questions.<\/p>\n<p>These questions are adapted from the legendary book <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/en\/book\/show\/11721966\">Good Strategy, Bad Strategy<\/a> <\/em>by Richard Rumelt. What challenges do you want to overcome?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Most companies have the same core problem: they need more customers, and they need more money from those customers. What leverage can you exploit?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The best content strategies include <em>leverage:<\/em> your company\u2019s secret weapon, something that makes content easier to create, or helps it perform better. Virtually every company has some type of leverage to\u00a0use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unique data. <\/strong>Many companies have access to unique data from their users or products.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal brands.<\/strong> Others have the benefit of well-known founders or team members with big social media followings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Team expertise and skills. <\/strong>Some teams have unique experiences that can be turned into unique content (like our very own <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patrickstox?lang=en\">Patrick Stox<\/a>, a.k.a. Which types of content can overcome those challenges?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>There are plenty of content types, from <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/seo-writing\/\">search content<\/a> to sales enablement, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Zapier\u2019s strategy is built around organic search, generating an estimated <em>8 million <\/em>monthly visits:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" that an estimated 92.8% of their monthly organic search traffic comes from their blog and app integration pages combined:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" pages<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>For example, Zapier have created over 1,000 pages in their \/google-sheets subfolder, which generates an estimated 4,000 organic pageviews per\u00a0month:<\/p>\n<figure fuel growth.<\/strong> Zapier is a freemium company: the majority of its users pay nothing to use the product, and only a small percentage become paying customers. To grow, content needs to generate lots and <em>lots <\/em>of visitors. Organic search content provides the predictable, compounding traffic growth needed to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/blog\/saas-seo\/\">make the freemium model work<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marketing to people in dozens of different industries.<\/strong> Zapier is a <em>horizontal <\/em>product, used across many industries, from marketing to finance, so Zapier writes about topics and tools used in dozens of industries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Helping users get more value from the product.<\/strong> Zapier is easy to start with but can quickly become more complicated. \u201cHow to\u201d content helps guide users toward helpful use\u00a0cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What leverage does Zapier exploit?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Integrations with hundreds of tools.<\/strong> Zapier can connect to a mind-boggling array of tools, from calendars to website builders to databases.
