Use SEO-driven hashtags<\/h3>\n<p>Instagram has <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUV20kxvLgS\/\">shared<\/a> some specific hashtag tips for showing up in the search results:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use only relevant hashtags.<\/li>\n<li>Use a combination of well-known, niche, and specific (think branded or campaign-based) hashtags.<\/li>\n<li>Limit hashtags to 3 to 5 per post.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t use irrelevant or overly generic hashtags like #explorepage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And here\u2019s an important PSA: It no longer works to hide hashtags in comments! Hashtags need to be placed directly in the caption to impact the search results.<\/p>\n<p>So, what are the best hashtags for SEO on Instagram?<\/p>\n<p>That depends on your business and your audience. To get a sense of which <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/instagram-hashtags\/\">hashtags are already driving traffic to your posts<\/a>, take a look at your <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/instagram-analytics-tools-business\/\">Instagram Insights<\/a>. The Insights for any post will tell you how many impressions for that post came from hashtags.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve used multiple hashtags, Instagram analytics won\u2019t tell you exactly which ones did the heavy lifting. Post at the right time<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/best-time-to-post-on-facebook-twitter-instagram\/\">Posting at the right time<\/a> is an important factor in sparking early engagement, which impacts the popularity ranking signal. Knowing the best times to post ensures your content gets a search boost while it\u2019s still relevant and fresh.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/help.hootsuite.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/1260804306589-Discover-the-best-times-to-post\">Hootsuite\u2019s Best Time to Publish feature<\/a> (found under Analytics) tells you the best times to post on Instagram (as well as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and TikTok). The recommendations are based on your past performance and tailored to your unique audience and their activity patterns on social.<\/p>\n<p>But, there\u2019s no \u201cbest\u201d time to publish for everything. Now we\u2019re moving on to talk about improving the search visibility of your whole account.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of Instagram\u2019s search function is to return the most relevant results to users. One way to signal that relevance is to have a consistent theme to your account. Choose a niche and generally stay within it, posting relevant content that speaks to a consistent set of keywords.<\/p>\n<p>That overall body of work will tell the Instagram search engine that you\u2019ve got more to offer than just one specific post.<\/p>\n<p>Staying focused on a niche is also a good way to build a loyal and engaged following. While that\u2019s an excellent goal on its own, it also contributes to search visibility, since engagement is important for the popularity ranking signal.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Add a location to your bio<\/h3>\n<p>Include a location in your bio if it\u2019s relevant to your business. Only Business accounts can add a location, so this is just one more reason to make the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/instagram-business-profile\/\">switch to a business account<\/a> if you haven\u2019t already done so.<\/p>\n<p>To add a profile location for Instagram bio SEO, open the Instagram app and tap on your <strong>profile icon<\/strong>. Tap <strong>Edit Profile<\/strong>, then <strong>Contact Options<\/strong>. Enter your address, being as specific or as general as you like. You can enter your specific street address if that\u2019s relevant, or just use your city.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you turn on the slider bar for <strong>Display contact info<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Your location only appears on your profile page on the app, not the web version of Instagram. But once it\u2019s attached to your account, it\u2019s a ranking signal to the Instagram search engine regardless of whether your audience is using the app or the web.<\/p>\n<p>For bonus Instagram search points, make sure your business location is taggable so it appears in Instagram\u2019s searchable map.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"\/>\n<p>This requires you to<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/link-instagram-to-facebook-page\/\"> connect your Instagram account to a Facebook Business Page<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/197254963682414?helpref=faq_content\">edit the address on your Facebook Page<\/a>. Engage with accounts that rank for your target keywords<\/h3>\n<p>Engaging with accounts that already rank for your target keywords helps Instagram understand what niche your account fits into through the user activity ranking signal.<\/p>\n<p>But beyond that, engaging with fellow Instagram users is a good way to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/instagram-engagement\/#15_ways_to_increase_engagement_on_Instagram\">encourage them to engage back with you<\/a>. And, as we\u2019ve said several times already, engagement is a hugely important popularity ranking signal, so this is an easy way to double-dip on ranking factors. It\u2019s also just a general Instagram best practice!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Follow the Recommendations Guidelines<\/h3>\n<p>Instagram search results factor in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/313829416281232\">Instagram Recommendations Guidelines<\/a>. Accounts that go against these guidelines appear lower in search results or do not appear in search at all.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that the Recommendations Guidelines are more stringent than the <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/477434105621119\">Community Guidelines<\/a>. In short, if you violate the Community Guidelines, your content will be removed from Instagram altogether. If you go against the Recommendations Guidelines, your content will still appear on the platform, but it will be harder to find.<\/p>\n<p>Instagram search <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/help.instagram.com\/313829416281232\">avoids recommending<\/a> content that is \u201clow-quality, objectionable, or sensitive,\u201d as well as content that \u201cmay be inappropriate for younger viewers.\u201d Some specific examples of what NOT to do include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clickbait or engagement bait<\/li>\n<li>Exaggerated health claims<\/li>\n<li>Unoriginal content copied from another source<\/li>\n<li>Misleading claims or content<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/instagram-automation-tools-software\/\">Buying likes<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure you\u2019re on the right side of the Recommendations Guidelines by checking your account status.<\/p>\n<p>From your profile, tap the <strong>menu icon<\/strong>, then <strong>Settings<\/strong> > <strong>Preferences<\/strong> (or Account, depending on your account type) > <strong>Account Status<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here you\u2019ll see if anything you\u2019ve posted violates the guidelines, and what you should do about it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Consider Meta Verified (for Creators only)<\/h3>\n<p>Meta is currently testing a paid verification bundle that includes \u201cincreased visibility and reach with prominence in some areas of the platform \u2013 like search, comments and recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p>For now, <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2023\/02\/testing-meta-verified-to-help-creators\/\">Meta Verified<\/a> is only testing in Australia and New Zealand. The paid nature of the program has raised some outcry, so it\u2019s unclear for now where this will go.
