If a spammer or shifty character got ahold of the specific recipe for viral video success, that would be bad news for all the platform\u2019s users, right?<\/p>\n<p>But in the interest of transparency, some platforms have started to share some details at a basic level\u2014here\u2019s what we know about <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/facebook-algorithm\/\">Facebook\u2019s algorithm<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n<p>All of which is to say that <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-us\/how-tiktok-recommends-videos-for-you\">TikTok finally made a post in 2020<\/a> revealing a handful of the key ranking signals for the TikTok recommendation algorithm. Is it highly likely things have evolved over the past four years? Absolutely. But TikTok hasn\u2019t shared any further details at this point (so mysterious!), so we\u2019ve gotta work with the info we\u2019ve got\u2026 even if it\u2019s limited.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"post-456999-_ko1ays9mmq9r\"\/><strong>TikTok algorithm ranking signals<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The main factors that influence the TikTok algorithm are user interactions, video information, and device and account settings.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"post-456999-_luxq3t41cwkp\"\/><strong>1. User interactions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Similar to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/instagram-algorithm\/\">the Instagram algorithm<\/a>, the TikTok algorithm bases its recommendations on a user\u2019s interactions with content on the app. Any time you give a clue about what kind of content you like or don\u2019t like, the TikTok algorithm clocks that data. Anytime you follow an account or hide an account, TikTok is taking note.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the user interactions that will impact what shows up on your For You Page:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Videos you\u2019ve liked or shared on the app<\/li>\n<li>Videos you\u2019ve added to your favorites<\/li>\n<li>Videos you\u2019ve marked as \u201cNot Interested\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Videos you\u2019ve reported as inappropriate<\/li>\n<li>Interests you\u2019ve expressed by interacting with organic content and ads<\/li>\n<li>Which accounts you follow<\/li>\n<li>Comments you\u2019ve posted<\/li>\n<li>Creators or sounds you\u2019ve chosen to hide<\/li>\n<li>Whether you watch all the way to the end of a longer video<\/li>\n<li>Content you create on your own account<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"post-456999-_1zfswwp6o8et\"\/><strong>2. Video information<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The TikTok algorithm is also collecting information about the videos you seek out through search. Video information signals include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Captions<\/li>\n<li>Sounds<\/li>\n<li>Hashtags<\/li>\n<li>Effects<\/li>\n<li>Trending topics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"post-456999-_9xrgv4ibb7k6\"\/><strong>3. Device and account settings<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t have as much influence as the user interaction and video information signals, but device and account settings still factor in. These are the settings <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/what-is-tiktok\/\">TikTok<\/a> uses to optimize performance. But because they\u2019re based on one-time settings choices rather than active engagements, TikTok doesn\u2019t deem them to be quite as relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the device and account settings included in the TikTok algorithm are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Language preference<\/li>\n<li>Country setting (you may be more likely to see content from people in your own country)<\/li>\n<li>Type of mobile device<\/li>\n<li>Categories of interest you selected as a new user<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re not happy with the recommendations you\u2019re getting, it\u2019s possible to <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-us\/introducing-a-way-to-refresh-your-for-you-feed-on-tiktok-us\">reset your own personal algorithm<\/a>. For a fresh start, head to Settings and Privacy, tap Content Preferences, then Refresh your For You Page.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" id=\"post-456999-_qppe1mq0cx1s\"\/><strong>What\u2019s not included in the TikTok algorithm<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just as important as what TikTok does take into account when it\u2019s working its magic is the type of content it <em>won\u2019t <\/em>recommend. This includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Duplicated content<\/li>\n<li>Content you\u2019ve already seen<\/li>\n<li>Content the algorithm flags as spam (including videos \u201cseeking to artificially increase traffic\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Potentially upsetting content (TikTok gives the examples of \u201cgraphic medical procedures\u201d or \u201clegal consumption of regulated goods\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One more element that TikTok doesn\u2019t take into account: follower count. This is great news for new <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/tiktok-stats\/\">TikTok users<\/a>, or those who haven\u2019t yet built up a large follower base. Anyone can have a hit on the platform, because TikTok doesn\u2019t base any of its recommended content on how many followers you have or the performance of your previous videos.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, accounts that do have more followers will get more views because users are actively seeking that content. But if you have great content that speaks directly to your <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/target-market\/\">target audience<\/a>, you have as much chance to land on their For You page as the biggest TikTok stars.<\/p>\n<p>At least that\u2019s what <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.tiktok.com\/en-us\/how-tiktok-recommends-videos-for-you\">TikTok claims<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may come across a video in your feed that doesn\u2019t appear to \u2026 have amassed a huge number of likes\u2026. Bringing a diversity of videos into your For You feed gives you additional opportunities to stumble upon new content categories, discover new creators, and experience new perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in learning even more about the ins and outs of the algorithm, TikTok has opened a Transparency Center. In your For You feed, tap on the share panel. Find your subculture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Connecting with existing communities is important on every social platform.
