The deadline for compliance passed earlier this month and Alphabet, Apple and Meta have been identified as subjects of the first probes for non-compliance.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the speed with which the E.U. is acting, commissioner for internal market Thierry Breton said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe law is the law. We can\u2019t just sit around and wait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/eu-investigate-apple-google-meta-potential-digital-markets-act-breaches-2024-03-25\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The alleged breaches. <\/strong>The probes suggest that the companies have failed to comply with the law in different ways:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/MT_Post-text --><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alphabet and Apple may have prevented businesses from telling users about cheaper products than their own.<\/li>\n<li>Apple may have failed in its obligation to allow users to easily uninstall apps and change default settings on the iPhone.<\/li>\n<li>Alphabet may have preferenced its own products in search results.<\/li>\n<li>Meta\u2019s \u201cno ads\u201d subscription model may not be in compliance with the Act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> These companies may have deep pockets and many lawyers, but regulatory headaches are mounting fast. Apple <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/doj-lays-siege-to-apples-walled-garden\/\">now faces<\/a> an antitrust lawsuit in the U.S. Google <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/google-hits-back-at-iab-tech-lab-privacy-sandbox-assessment\/\">is currently hamstrung<\/a> in its plans to deprecate third-party cookies by the U.K. Competition &amp; Markets Authority. Born in London, but a New Yorker for almost three decades, Kim started covering enterprise software ten years ago. His experience encompasses SaaS for the enterprise, digital- ad data-driven urban planning, and applications of SaaS, digital technology, and data in the marketing space. He first wrote about marketing technology as editor of Haymarket\u2019s The Hub, a dedicated marketing tech website, which subsequently became a channel on the established direct marketing brand DMN.
