Enter the links to their social profiles in your competitive analysis spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Check who appears in social searches for those keywords<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The brands that rank for your keywords in Google are not necessarily the same ones that rank well within the social networks themselves. Since this is a social media competitive analysis, you need to see who comes up tops in social search results, too.<\/p>\n<p>For example, head to Instagram and enter your keyword in the search box. If these brands are similar to yours, it\u2019s worth considering them as potential competitors.<\/p>\n<p>To find which brands your audience follows on Facebook:<\/p>\n<p>You may find that none of the Pages identified are relevant to your industry, but if they are, add them to your list of competitors.<\/p>\n<p>On X, rather than checking on your whole audience, you can check to see who your top followers are connected to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open X Analytics.<\/li>\n<li>Scroll down to each of your\u00a0<b>Top Followers<\/b>\u00a0for the last several months<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<b>View profile<\/b>\u00a0for each Top Follower<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<b>Following<\/b>\u00a0on their profile to see the full list of accounts they\u2019re following, or click\u00a0<b>Tweets &amp; replies<\/b>\u00a0to see which accounts they interact with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Choose up to 5 competitors to focus on<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>By now you\u2019ve got a huge list of potential direct and indirect competitors \u2014 far more than you could reasonably include in a thorough competitive analysis. It\u2019s time to narrow down your list to the top three to five brands who you are most closely competing with on social media. Choose the brands that have the closest fit to your target markets.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Step_2_Gather_intel\"><b>Step 2. Gather intel<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now that you know who your competition is, you need to learn what they\u2019re up to on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Click through to the social networks of each of the brands you\u2019ve identified as top competitors. As mentioned above, you can usually find these links in the header or footer of their website. In your social media competitive analysis template, make note of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What social networks are they on?<\/li>\n<li>How large is their following and how fast is it growing?<\/li>\n<li>Who are their top followers?<\/li>\n<li>How often do they post?<\/li>\n<li>What is their engagement rate?<\/li>\n<li>What is their social share of voice?<\/li>\n<li>What hashtags do they use most often?<\/li>\n<li>How many hashtags do they use?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can find much of this information about your competitors just by clicking around their social profiles. For more streamlined data gathering, check out the analytics\u00a0tools mentioned below.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to track all of these things for your own social channels as well. This will help you with your analysis in the next step.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Step_3_Do_a_SWOT_analysis\"><b>Step 3. Do a SWOT analysis<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve gathered all that data, it\u2019s time to analyze it in a way that helps you understand where you stand compared to the competition. As part of this analysis, you\u2019ll also look for potential ways to improve your <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hootsuite.com\/how-to-create-a-social-media-marketing-plan\/\">social marketing strategy<\/a>, and potential hazards to watch out for along the way.<\/p>\n<p>A SWOT analysis is a great tool to help you think clearly about all of this information. In a SWOT analysis, you take a hard look at your business and the competition to identify: <strong>strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The important thing to know is that strengths and weaknesses involve factors internal to your brand.
