Doing so allows you to configure the tool to analyze data accurately and efficiently. It also lets you draw the best conclusions for designing, refocusing and defining your digital strategies.<\/p>\n<p>GA4 users can configure many functionalities, including custom dimensions, which allow for more detailed and personalized data analysis.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-dimensions-in-ga4\">What are dimensions in GA4?<\/h2>\n<p>Google defines a dimension as an attribute of your data. It describes your data, and it\u2019s usually written in text rather than numbers.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/MT_Post-text --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\">\n<p>\nhttps:\/\/9453ef31e2da492a6a1fb6f8591a0fe1.safeframe.googlesyndication.com\/safeframe\/1-0-40\/html\/container.html\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>An example of dimensions would be source\/medium, which shows how a user arrives at a website:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GA4 - Session source \/ medium\" class=\"wp-image-442640\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Session-source-medium.png.webp?ssl=1\"\/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Session-source-medium.png.webp?ssl=1\" alt=\"GA4 - Session source \/ medium\" class=\"wp-image-442640\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Another example of dimension would also be the Event name, which shows the different events that happen on a website and how the user interacts with it:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GA4 - Engagement > events\" class=\"wp-image-442641\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Engagement-events.png.webp?ssl=1\"\/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Engagement-events.png.webp?ssl=1\" alt=\"GA4 - Engagement > events\" class=\"wp-image-442641\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>When creating the GA4 account, the tool preconfigures a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/9143382?hl=en&sjid=1212279526727863729-EU#zippy=%2Catribuci%C3%B3n%2Cgrupos-demogr%C3%A1ficos%2Ccomercio-electr%C3%B3nico%2Cevento%2Cjuegos%2Cgeneral%2C%C3%A1rea-geogr%C3%A1fica%2Cenlace%2Cp%C3%A1gina-o-pantalla%2Cplataforma-o-dispositivo%2Ceditor%2Ctiempo%2Cfuente-de-tr%C3%A1fico%2Cusuario%2Ctiempo-de-vida-de-los-usuarios%2Cv%C3%ADdeo%2Cpublicidad%2Cpredictivos%2Cingresos%2Csearch-console%2Csesi%C3%B3n%2Cattribution%2Cdemographics%2Cecommerce%2Cevent%2Cgaming%2Cgeography%2Clink%2Cpage-screen%2Cplatform-device%2Cpublisher%2Ctime%2Ctraffic-source%2Cuser%2Cuser-lifetime%2Cvideo%2Cadvertising%2Cpredictive%2Crevenue%2Csession\" target=\"_blank\">wide list of dimensions<\/a>\u00a0automatically by default.<\/p>\n<p>However, if this is not enough for your strategy\u2019s analysis and you need to analyze attributes in more detail and specifically based on the website\u2019s objectives, you can create custom dimensions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-events-and-event-parameters\">Events and event parameters<\/h2>\n<p>To understand custom dimensions and how to create them, you must first understand some GA4 concepts \u2013 events and parameters.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/event-tracking-google-analytics-4-395023\">Events<\/a>\u00a0are the metrics that allow you to measure specific user interactions on a website, such as loading a page, clicking on a link or submitting a form.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-analytics-4-setting-up-event-parameters-430908\">Event parameters<\/a>\u00a0are additional data that site information about those events (i.e., additional information about how users interact with a website).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are two types of event parameters in GA4, depending on how they are captured by the tool:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Automatically collected parameters:<\/strong>\u00a0These are preconfigured by GA4, which automatically captures a set of parameters (e.g.\u00a0<em>page_location, page_referrer\u00a0<\/em>or<em>\u00a0page_title<\/em>). Google provides a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/table\/13594742?sjid=1212279526727863729-EU\" target=\"_blank\">list of all these event parameters<\/a>\u00a0created automatically or enhanced measurement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custom parameters<\/strong>: These allow you to collect information that is not captured by default. This applies to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/9267735?hl=en&ref_topic=13367566&sjid=12846188927219766658-EU\" target=\"_blank\">recommended events<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/12229021?hl=en&ref_topic=13367566&sjid=5089282585312313517-EU\" target=\"_blank\">custom events<\/a>, where custom settings are required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-ga4-custom-dimensions\">What are GA4 custom dimensions?<\/h2>\n<p>Custom dimensions are attributes that allow you to describe and collect data in a customized way. Essentially, they are parameters you create in GA4 to capture information that is not automatically tracked by the tool.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-types-of-custom-dimensions\">Types of custom dimensions<\/h3>\n<p>Depending on the information that you want to collect in a custom way, you can create different types of custom dimensions, as indicated by Google:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/topic\/marketing-analytics\/google-analytics-4\/\">MarTech\u2019s coverage of Google Analytics 4<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-is-it-recommended-to-create-custom-dimensions\">When is it recommended to create custom dimensions?<\/h2>\n<p>Before creating custom dimensions to analyze data in more detail, it is advisable to check whether these attributes already exist as automatic events predefined by GA4 or as options within enhanced measurement events.<\/p>\n<p>To determine if the data you want to analyze is already provided by automatic events, you can consult the list that Google Analytics offers under\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/9234069\" target=\"_blank\">Automatically collected events<\/a>. These events are collected automatically, so the user does not need to perform any additional actions.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the case for the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/9216061\" target=\"_blank\">enhanced measurement events<\/a>, these must be activated within the GA4 account if you want to collect this information.<\/p>\n<p>To activate these attributes, you will do it inside<em>\u00a0Admin > Data streams > Events > Enhanced measurement.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GA4 - Enhanced measurement events\" class=\"wp-image-442642\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Enhanced-measurement-events.png.webp?ssl=1\"\/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Enhanced-measurement-events.png.webp?ssl=1\" alt=\"GA4 - Enhanced measurement events\" class=\"wp-image-442642\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>If the information you want to analyze is not included within these automatic events, it is recommended that you create it as a custom dimension.<\/p>\n<p>Get the daily newsletter search marketers rely on.Business email addressSubscribe<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/termsofuse\" target=\"_blank\">See terms.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-set-up-custom-dimensions\">How to set up custom dimensions<\/h2>\n<p>Regardless of the type of custom dimension, it must be created via Google Tag Manager. Below is a step-by-step guide for configuring an event-scoped custom dimension.<\/p>\n<p>Before getting started, make sure the GA4 and Google Tag Manager accounts are properly\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/how-to-set-up-google-analytics-4-using-google-tag-manager-374584\">configured and linked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you need to define and create which event parameter you want and send it as a custom dimension in GA4.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, you are going to show in the following image how to create the event parameter to analyze the URL of the video that a user plays on your website:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GA4 - Video engagement event\" class=\"wp-image-442643\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Video-engagement-event.png.webp?ssl=1\"\/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/searchengineland.com\/wp-content\/seloads\/2024\/05\/GA4-Video-engagement-event.png.webp?ssl=1\" alt=\"GA4 - Video engagement event\" class=\"wp-image-442643\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>As it is a manually configured event parameter only included in Google Tag Manager, it will not be enough for GA4 to include it in its reports automatically.
