AI-powered martech news and releases: August 1

What do artificial intelligence and the Holy Roman Empire have in common? Inbreeding by both produced something called the Habsburg Jaw. (physical example at right)

The Holy Roman Empire was a motley collection of pieces of Europe that lasted from 1516 to 1918 and was ruled by the Habsburg family from start to finish. Staying in power for 402 years is no easy task. One of the big problems is running out of male heirs. To address this problem, the Habsburgs practiced consanguinity.

This resulted in many generations having a huge, jutting jaw. Not only was it unattractive, it also caused great pain. (Inbreeding didn’t help them intellectually either: The Habsburgs started World War I which finished them and their empire.)

The Habsburgs became relevant again when Jathan Sadowski saw the jaw as the perfect metaphor for what happens when artificial intelligence is trained on data generated by artificial intelligence.

This is happening because scientists ran out of human-created data for training large language models. That’s right, they’ve already used all the data available on the internet.
