Meta suffers major outage at Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads

Meta’s online properties were down for about two hours Tuesday, preventing more than half a million Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads users from using their accounts, and disrupting ad creation and management as well.

The incident began around 10:00 a.m. Eastern time. It logged out Facebook users, prevented Instagram users from refreshing their feeds, and on Threads there was a message saying, “Sorry, something went wrong. Try again.”

Shortly before 11 a.m. Meta spokesman Andy Stone posted on X/Twitter: “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.” That was updated with an all-clear at 12:19 p.m.

Areas impacted. Meta issued a statement, confirming major disruptions to ads creation and management, sharing and content management, and inboxes. The statement read:

  • “We are aware of an issue users are having logging into our platforms. Our engineering teams are aware and are actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

As of 1:10 p.m. Eastern, Meta’s Business Suite Status site showed everything but inbox functions were back to normal.

The outage hit users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Mexico and other countries.
