{"id":7073,"date":"2024-04-02T14:56:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T14:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tup.kxe.temporary.site\/future-proofing-martech-strategies-against-macro-forces\/"},"modified":"2024-04-02T14:56:26","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T14:56:26","slug":"future-proofing-martech-strategies-against-macro-forces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/okdesign.ca\/fr\/future-proofing-martech-strategies-against-macro-forces\/","title":{"rendered":"Future-proofing martech strategies against macro forces"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As martech practitioners, we need to stay abreast of more than product and channel features, capabilities, competitor comparisons, stack fit, best practices, etc.  We should also consider macro factors, which Investopedia defines as \u201cinfluential fiscal, natural or geopolitical event[s] that broadly affects a regional or national economy.\u201d Our recommendations to stakeholders should account for them.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-real-challenges\">Real challenges<\/h2>\n<p>For example, the U.S. Congress is back at it with White House support. It is seriously <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/us-house-passes-bill-tiktok-bytedance-sell-ban-438392\" target=\"_blank\">considering banning China-based social network TikTok<\/a> to force it to sell itself to a company that\u2019s not Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>News outlets have spotlit individual influencers who owe a significant portion of their income to social media channels. Thus, a platform ban would threaten their short to mid-term livelihoods. Larger companies that have enjoyed success using a targeted channel may also face challenges.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/MT_Post-text --><\/p>\n<p>However, national bans are not the only threats to individual influencers and companies. Changes to how different platforms administer their ad networks can also impact them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, CNBC recently explained how direct-to-consumer (D2C) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GNktc1Ppi6A\" target=\"_blank\">companies benefited from cheap social media advertising<\/a> years ago but are now struggling as platforms have increased their ad pricing. This includes well-known companies like Allbirds, Casper and Peloton.<\/p>\n<p>As martech practitioners, we are certainly aware of the challenges our SEO colleagues face when search engines tweak their ranking algorithms. Let\u2019s also not forget how regulators and browsers are placing further restrictions on cookies.<\/p>\n<p>While it is important to include such threats in business continuity planning, there\u2019s a bigger concern here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/current-trends-in-marketing-and-data-have-deep-roots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Current trends in marketing and data have deep roots<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-macro-factors\">Macro factors<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-platform-owners\">Platform owners<\/h3>\n<p>First, there are the fickle whims of ultrarich owners. For example, when <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/elon-musk-kills-the-twitter-brand-welcome-to-the-age-of-x\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk acquired X<\/a>\/Twitter, one of the main drivers was decreasing the terms of service related to user interaction; Musk felt that the platform was infringing upon too many users\u2019 \u201cfreedom of expression.\u201d He then slashed the staff of teams maintaining positive community interaction. This spooked major advertisers concerned about their posts appearing next to problematic materials. Further, these changes resulted in a dramatic drop in usage that narrowed the audience X can offer advertisers.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a current podcast commercial for ADP, the human resources services company that many associate with their pay slips and W-2 tax forms. The ad focuses on employees discussing risks to their organization and one of them wonders what would happen if a celebrity buys the company. It depends upon the celebrity, the other person quips, but there\u2019s no need to worry for ADP clients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the celebrity owner, the rest of the marketplace is affected, and in this particular case \u2014 tech platforms. What makes a funny joke in an ad requires serious consideration in the real world.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-culture-wars\">Culture wars<\/h3>\n<p>Second, political culture wars sometimes affect our line of work. A recent example is social media moderation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I am not a legal expert, but it is important to understand that \u2014 at least in the U.S. \u2014 constitutional freedom of expression protects individuals from government interference, not the terms and services of private entities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Various politicians (not unlike other prominent individuals like Musk) have questioned social media platforms\u2019 moderation policies, accusing tech companies of taking sides. This culture war has affected most platforms, not just X.<\/p>\n<p>As some platforms have eased moderation, brands have found their posts and ads next to someone\u2019s controversial opinion on a hot-button issue. From a brand perspective, this is problematic. While companies may not weigh in on specific topics, the appearance of supporting a stance can gain and \u2014 perhaps more importantly \u2014 repel potential customers.<\/p>\n<p>Then, there are times when <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/metas-stock-falls-after-donald-trumps-enemy-of-the-people-comment\/\" target=\"_blank\">a prominent political figure lashes out at a platform<\/a> and dramatically affects its stock price, threatening its short-term stability. Such events can further threaten a channel\u2019s viability for advertisers.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-societal-changes\">Societal changes<\/h3>\n<p>Third, societal changes can also affect the suitability and effectiveness of platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recently, many in society blame social media for significant declines in the mental health of youth. This certainly threatens how companies with youth-oriented products can use tech platforms to advertise to youth and there are far more implications to this societal concern.<\/p>\n<p>This awareness has also inspired many people who are young at heart but not by age to also decrease their social media usage, which in turn affects how companies can use such platforms to target them as well.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-long-term-schedules\">Long-term schedules<\/h3>\n<p>On a lighter note, sports-related companies should also factor in the broader world in their marketing activities and planning. Believe it or not, the sport of Curling is enjoying significantly more popularity from time to time. That usually follows a four-year pattern. <\/p>\n<p>Hint: The Winter Olympics. Thus, a Curling-related company should factor that into its plans, analysis and forecasts.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, such threats are not unique to the current wave of technology. For instance, advertising via radio and television has evolved over several decades \u2014 and centuries in the case of newspapers and magazines. <\/p>\n<p>Various regulations, tactics and societal trends have affected these channels and how companies harness them. We can take a cue on how those industries have weathered such change.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-actions\">Actions<\/h2>\n<p>So, what do we do? There are ways that we can stay abreast. For instance, plenty of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/top-book-and-podcast-recommendations-for-martech-professionals\/\" target=\"_blank\">technology-focused news podcasts<\/a> cover how broader geopolitical, political and societal trends and events affect our professional lives. Listening to them and reading their associated outlets will help one remain aware of relevant trends.<\/p>\n<p>Another important place to include such work is our continual <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/martech.org\/8-inexpensive-professional-development-ideas-for-martech-pros\/\" target=\"_blank\">professional development<\/a> efforts. This should include far more than narrow learning related to our specific job functions. In addition to enhancing our interpersonal skills, we should keep track of what\u2019s happening within the specific industries in which we work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps there is something particularly relevant for specific industries. Apartment management companies, for example, have gotten in trouble in the past for using advertising platforms like Facebook to target people using demographic filters like race and income. That leads to discrimination regarding housing, which isn\u2019t a good look. So, that sector needs to remain vigilant in ways different from other industries.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-complex-world\">A complex world<\/h2>\n<p>Our jobs are complex enough as they are to stay on top of products, vendors, competitors and audiences. Adding general news to the mix certainly complicates things more. However, we do not work in a vacuum immune from influences from the broader world.<\/p>\n<p>We ignore macro trends and issues to our peril \u2014 as well as to our employers.
