So I thought I\u2019d use it to test Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT and Perplexity AI.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gemini (formerly Bard) and ChatGPT returned similar content in a similar format to my query, \u201cWhat marketing technologies should a luxury retailer have in their martech stack?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both provided a summary of the different categories of marketing technology and the purpose of each technology. The answers weren\u2019t profound and didn\u2019t explain why these were the technologies to use. Based on this, it\u2019s hard to see any difference between Gemini and ChatGPT.\u00a0 Many people will use Gemini because many people use Google, but it has no draw beyond that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-perplexity-ai\">Perplexity AI<\/h2>\n<p>In contrast, Perplexity AI\u2019s recommendation reads like a college paper. It has a summary and is footnoted with sources. Its stack included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advertising & Promotion<\/li>\n<li>Content & Experience<\/li>\n<li>Social & Relationships<\/li>\n<li>Commerce & Sales<\/li>\n<li>Data Management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DhJC31EL8L8S VtOZJIzclc6j1ore DtJBL Wm33CpGZ Zb9e628xK1hAhD6NRBWizo7eDaQKheJ9ZlkSIQDNgQWz16WeC H8gHdghw3JmixBVBmyLmrkmeM0DjElTEZR34WGdcjRWcelR65vv13D6s\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/DhJC31EL8L8S-vtOZJIzclc6j1ore_dtJBL-wm33CpGZ-zb9e628xK1hAhD6NRBWizo7eDaQKheJ9ZlkSIQDNgQWz16WeC-H8gHdghw3JmixBVBmyLmrkmeM0DjElTEZR34WGdcjRWcelR65vv13D6s\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/DhJC31EL8L8S-vtOZJIzclc6j1ore_dtJBL-wm33CpGZ-zb9e628xK1hAhD6NRBWizo7eDaQKheJ9ZlkSIQDNgQWz16WeC-H8gHdghw3JmixBVBmyLmrkmeM0DjElTEZR34WGdcjRWcelR65vv13D6s\" alt=\"DhJC31EL8L8S VtOZJIzclc6j1ore DtJBL Wm33CpGZ Zb9e628xK1hAhD6NRBWizo7eDaQKheJ9ZlkSIQDNgQWz16WeC H8gHdghw3JmixBVBmyLmrkmeM0DjElTEZR34WGdcjRWcelR65vv13D6s\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>One drawback is that Perplexity\u2019s technology recommendation was more high-level than the others. For example, CRM was bundled under Social & Relationships. It would have been much more useful with more granularity.<\/p>\n<p>As with all AI, asking the same question multiple times can get different answers.<\/p>\n<p>With Perplexity the cited sources remained the same each time the question was posed, but some results were more detailed, listing categories like email marketing and giving examples of providers like Klayviyo. Perplexity also offers a related search feature that helps expand the breadth and depth of the search.<\/p>\n<p>ChatGPT had some variation in its search results as well. The main difference was removing AR and Visual Commerce and replacing them with Omnichannel Integration. By contrast, Gemini returned the same result each time.<\/p>\n<p>Perplexity stood out for me because it cited the sources. I found this useful in determining how trustworthy and credible the results were. I also liked the option to view images of the technology stack on the right side of the page. It\u2019s the only chatbot that offers this and I found it gave me more understanding. Also interesting, Perplexity has a placeholder where videos will someday be listed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-judging-idea-generation-ability\">Judging idea generation ability<\/h2>\n<p>I also wanted to see how these bots did when it came to generating ideas. So I asked each for five unique names for a beverage company specializing in fresh fruit. The responses:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Google Gemini<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>OpenAI ChatGPT<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>Perplexity AI<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Ripe Riot<\/td>\n<td>Orchard Oasis Beverages\u00a0<\/td>\n<td>Fairy-Tale Fruits<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Sun-Kissed Sips\u00a0<\/td>\n<td>Juicy Harvest Drinks\u00a0<\/td>\n<td>Epic Apple Co.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>The Orchard Collective<\/td>\n<td>Fruitful Sips Co.<\/td>\n<td>Whacky Watermelons<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Blushing Nectar<\/td>\n<td>Citrus Grove Refreshments<\/td>\n<td>Fruit Boutique<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Fresh Squeezed Muse<\/td>\n<td>Berry Bliss Beverages\u00a0<\/td>\n<td>Vitamin Valley<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Judging creativity is subjective. So, I evaluated the responses on the uniqueness of the names.\u00a0ChatGPT did the worst here, providing three names of existing beverage companies. Gemini and Perplexity each had only one of these.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>While I believe Perplexity currently edges out Gemini in features, Alphabet\u2019s business model for search is very entrenched and will be difficult to topple.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START INLINE FORM --><\/p>\n<div class=\"nl-inline-form border py-2 px-1 my-2\">\n<div class=\"row align-items-center justify-content-center nl-inline-container\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-lg-3 col-xl-auto pb-2 pb-lg-0\">\n<p class=\"inline-form-text text-center mb-0\">Fuel for your marketing strategy.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- END INLINE FORM -->\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Opinions expressed in this article are those of the guest author and not necessarily MarTech.
